The
Pyrenees are fascinating, not only for its birds but also for its spectaculair
landscapes and ancient history. It has some of the finest monuments of
Spain, which offer not only architecture but also interesting birds as
in the case of San Juan de la Peña, Loarre and Alquezar.
If
you travel by car, the Spanish Central Pyrenees can be entered from the
North at te Somport, near the village of Canfranc. The distance from Paris
to Canfranc is nearly 1,200 km. From Barcelona airport, where you can
hire a car, it is about 300 km. by good roads. Ryan Air has daily flights
London Standsted – Zaragoza, which is only 90 km. distance from the Pyrenees.
Detailed
maps of the Pyrenees are recommended e.g. 1:25,000; edition of Editorials
Alpino and Pirineo, showing contour lines. These can be bought in most
of the mountain villages in shops, hotels and campings.
Spring
and summer (Februari - July) is the most popular time for a birding
trip but winter is excellent too and autumn is good for hiking as well
as watching vultures.
We
can provide groups and individuals with a local expert and an English
speaker and organise tours to ensure there are no communication problems
on your holiday and you get to the best birding spots.
We
recommend one of our Rustic Holiday Homes, placed at the foothills of
the Pyrenees and in the centre of a wider birdwatching area.
